Cloudy IceUpdated a year ago
Cloudy ice can present itself in one of three ways when using the Klaris:
- The lower 1/3 of multiple cubes is cloudy.
- The lower 1/3 of a single cube is cloudy.
- More than 1/2 of any cube is cloudy/showing striations.
1. The lower 1/3 of multiple cubes are cloudy:
A cloudy lower section of all the cubes indicates an issue establishing the initial layer of ice. Whisps or minor imperfections can appear on the cubes' edges, faces, or corners, and a cloudy appearance in a lower cube section. Water sources, scale buildup on the plastic inserts/silicone tray, or improper installation of the inserts can cause this.
Things to try:
- Start by thoroughly cleaning the silicone tray and the clear plastic inserts with standard dish soap, as seen in our video.
- Ensure that the inserts are correctly installed and tamped down fully, and that there are no air bubbles underneath - check out our video for an example.
- Try using distilled water. Hard water and aerated water can impact clarity. Read more about water quality and clear ice-making here.

2. The bottom 1/3 of a single cube is cloudy:
A cloudy lower section of a singular cube indicates an issue establishing the initial layer of ice in just one well of the mold. This can be due to improper seating of the plastic insert into a specific well of the silicone mold or the plastic insert not fitting the silicone mold in that exact orientation.
Things to try:
- Start by inspecting each plastic tray and well of the silicone mold, ensuring that all parts are completely clean and free of scale or imperfections.
- Next, rotate the orientation of the clear inserts within the silicone mold.
- If one cube is still imperfect, rotate the orientation of the silicone mold within the machine.
- If issues persist after trying the troubleshooting suggestions, please reach out for additional support.
3. More than 1/2 of one or multiple cubes is cloudy:
Two things are required to get clear ice, directional freezing and agitation of the water. When water agitation does not occur, a cloudy cube with striations of air/ imperfections in the cube is created, as shown above.
Things to try:
- Ensure that the water level reaches the “fill line” included on the inside of each silicone tray, as shown below.
- Start the Klaris. After about 30 seconds, the motor in the machine's lid should make an audible noise. If not, there could be an issue with the motor.
- If all other avenues have been explored and issues persist, please don't hesitate to reach out for additional support.
